Polyclinic and infirmary
The Stasi ran its own polyclinic and infirmary with a surgical ward in Houses 19 and 20. This meant that the MfS staff did not have to rely on the GDR’s often underequipped health care system. The Stasi thus provided medical care to its staff while maintaining conspiracy and isolation from the outside world. The MfS’ Central Medical Services were responsible for providing treatment and care.
In 1960, the Stasi began operating the two three- and two-storey buildings where a medical centre exists today. The five-storey connecting structure was added in 1966. Because the facility was soon unable to meet demand, the MfS acquired its own hospital in Berlin-Buch in 1980.
