The three-level exhibition in House 1, which contained the offices of the last Minister for State Security Erich Mielke, shows the origins, development and activities of the State Security as a ‘protection and security organ’ within the SED dictatorship. Numerous objects, many of them unique, such as special cameras, wiretaps, forced entry tools and devices used to covertly open letters, illustrate the extent of the Stasi’s surveillance operations. Excerpts from Stasi files document the actions taken by the MfS against its own population. Erich Mielke’s offices have been preserved in their original condition and are on view as part of the exhibition.
